Stockport is full of wonders, especially the unique Merseyway Shopping Centre, which opened in 1965 designed by architects Bernard Engle and Partners.
You don't need to look far to find relics of the modernist architecture, in the asymmetrical shapes, clean lines, use of glass and flat roofs.
In this workshop we'll be taking a short stroll around the shopping centre, using clay to take reliefs from interesting shapes and architectural details that we find. We'll then return to the workshop, creating plaster moulds directly from these clay reliefs. We will use these moulds to create new, ceramic tiles, capturing these relics and allowing us to repeat patterns.
You will each make a range of modernist tiles decorated with slips, which will be left in the workshop to dry before being fired. Your tiles will be ready for collection 2 weeks after the session.
